NFPA issues fire safety warnings on hover boards

Hover Boards Fire Warning
December 18, 2015

This week NFPA issued a warning for parents and families who have purchased hover boards for the holidays. Don’t let these safety concerns appear in your house and ruin your holiday season.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) today issued a series of safety tips urging hover board owners to read product guidelines and be aware of potential fire hazards when using these trendy devices.

NFPA offers the following tips to keep the holidays fire-safe. There is also a customizable safety tip sheet.

If you purchase a hover board:

  • Choose a device with the seal of an independent testing laboratory.
  • Read and follow all manufacturer directions.  If you do not understand the directions, ask for help.
  • An adult should be responsible for charging the hover board.
  • Do not leave a charging hover board unattended.
  • Never leave the hover board plugged in overnight.
  • Only use the charging cord that came with the hover board.
  • Stop using your hover board if it overheats.
  • Extreme hot or cold temperature can hurt the battery.
  • Be on the lookout for product updates from manufacturers and safety groups.
  • Many airlines have banned hover boards. If you plan to fly with a hover board, be sure to check with your air carrier.
  • When riding in a car, keep the hover board where you can see it in case it shows signs of a problem.

Happy Father’s Day!

fathersdayHFP Extends Our Thanks & Love To Our Days

And to All Dads, whither they’re still here with us or they’re only with us in spirit, Thank you for being a Dad!

Happy Father’s Day.

What Makes a Dad

The Great Spirit took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle’s flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then the Great Spirit combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
And knew the masterpiece was complete,
And this was called … My Dad.

Happy Memorial Day Weekend

Thank You For Your Service!

A deep and heart-felt Thank You to all the Men and Women of our Armed Services, living and in spirit! Thank you for your service and your sacrifice.

Memorial Day

Produced by The U.S. Air Force News Agency

Thank you to ALL our Animal Veterans!

Thank you to ALL our Animal Veterans!

This weekend is a reminder of the sacrifices that have been made for freedom. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the fallen Union Soldiers. The south too had its day of Decoration, but the date of celebration varied through out each region of the nation.

On June 28, 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Holidays Bill, which moved four holidays, including Memorial Day, from their traditional dates to a specified Monday in order to create a convenient three-day weekend. The change moved Memorial Day from its traditional May 30th date to the last Monday in May. The law took effect at the federal level in 1971.

From The Beginning
From its origins, Decoration Day expanded with each passing year becoming more nationally recognized for all Veterans of the Armed Forces and from every war the United States has participated in. The practice grew again after World War II when Decoration Day slowly transitioned to Memorial Day and included any family member that had passed. It became a day of remembering relatives and decorating cemeteries, whither or not they were service men and women. Many suggest the sacrifices that all Americans made during WWI and WWII to support our troops deserved recognition as well. Thus the day of honoring those who made sacrifices and lived through the hardships of war were included in Memorial Events.

Today Memorial Day is seen as one of the two biggest Patriotic Days of the year in the United States. Coming second only to the 4th of July. Flags are placed on grave sites for those who paid the greatest price for our freedom and flowers are laid by those we have lost and remember with memories and love.

What ever your method of celebration and honor this weekend, when you see a soldier thank them for their service. Let them know you appreciate their sacrifice and support them here and over there and every where.

Happy Memorial Day Weekend everyone. Please have a safe and relaxing extended weekend! And spend a few moments remembering what this weekend is really all about.

Thank you to the vets and their families for your service and your sacrifices. To those serving today, yesterday and tomorrow; you’re always in our thoughts and prayers!

Happy Mother’s Day – 2014

Happy Mother’s Day

We could not have taken on the hard work and effort without the Moms in our lives. We often forget how important they are to us, till after they’re gone. It seems like such a little thing to do one day each year, to let them know we care, love and appreciate all they do. They’re often the biggest part of our heart and soul. And without them, we couldn’t be where we are today.

Thank you, Mom
For standing by me through thick and thin,
For not giving up on me when I didn’t win.
For your patience and never-ending support,
For caring when I would sell myself short.

I am grateful knowing…
You’re always there building up my courage,
sharing your wisdom that always encourage.
If I lose my way you help me get back on track,
If my heart breaks, you bring the laughter back.

Mom, Thank you
For your guidance and the love you’ve shown,
For giving me the confidence to stand on my own.

For bailing me out when I needed it the most,
For being there to celebrate and toast!

For all the sacrifices to back my dreams,
For all the help with my crazy schemes.
For the days and nights you held my hand,
There’s no better Mom than you, in any land.

On Target For June Operation

announcementHFP Press Release
May 09, 2014

We can focus on what we can’t do or what we can. We choose the path of “can do”! When one door slams shut; you work to throw another door wide open. And that’s what we’ve been doing here at Holland Fire Protection.  Boy there’s been a lot of paperwork to start-up a company here in Virginia on a solid foundation. Preparing the business for growth before it even gets started takes a lot of work and effort. It’s well worth the extra effort, and we’re getting there.

Today the biggest challenge for starting up a small business in America is funding. Most small businesses get their initial funding from family, friends and their own bank accounts. In today’s financial market those resources have disappeared or they’ve been very limited in the help they can provide.

The start-ups of today must become innovative and think outside the box! We’re in the process of doing exactly that, thanks in big part to the help and guidance of SCORE‘s Richmond Chapter. Not to mention the virtual Library of Alexandria that you can find on the internet today.

Have there been glitches in our plan? Yes. Have there been struggles? Yes. Have we gone down one road that ended up somewhere we didn’t expect? Yes. But at each turn we learned something that has provided insight into the processes, or approaches we didn’t think about up front. What we learned on the back-end of those challenges will help us avoid pitfalls once we are in operation. Every stumbling block has provided knowledge that will keep the company solid and growing as we move into operations.

A few more forms and fees to go. But as of today, we’re on target to begin operations in June 2014. Stay Tuned!
